Audio studio (early access)

The Audio studio is a simple audio editor inside EnaCast Studio, made for a radio’s daily work: remove a piece, bleep a word, add a jingle or pull several clips out of an interview. It never modifies the original files: your edit is saved as a project you can reopen, and the new audio is produced on the server.

It does not replace each episode’s audio editor, which sets where a recording starts and ends and its markers.

  • From an episode: on the episode page, the Open in studio button. The project starts with the episode’s current audio on one track.
  • From the menu: Audio studio shows the Projects tab. Type a name and press New project to start an empty one, or Open to carry on with an existing one.

Each project belongs to one station. If you manage several, opening a project switches the studio to the project’s station.

  • Drag across the audio to select a time range (as in Audacity). A click moves the playhead. The I and O keys set the selection’s start and end at the playhead, and Enter plays the selection.
  • Cut selection (X) removes that range and closes the gap. With no selection, the same key removes the selected clip (Remove clip).
  • Bleep (B) covers the selection with a tone. Bleeps appear in their own lane, Bleeps, where you can remove them one by one.
  • Split (S) splits the clip at the playhead.
  • Drag a clip by its title strip to move it (also to another track), and by its edges to trim it.
  • + and − zoom the timeline in and out; Fit shows all of it.
  • Add track adds another track to mix on (a jingle, a sweeper, another interview). Each track has a name, a mute button, Track volume and a button to remove it.
  • Select a clip to set its Volume, Fade in and Fade out. If the clip comes from an episode, Open episode takes you there.
  • A clip tagged Previous version plays the audio the episode had before you replaced it from the studio (see Save the audio).

Add audio opens a dialog with three tabs:

  • Episodes: search for an episode and pick its Current audio or its Original recording.
  • Audio library: jingles, bleeps, clips and mixes you have already saved.
  • Upload: drag files onto Drag audio files here or press Choose files (you can upload several at once).

You can also drag audio files from your computer straight into the editor:

  • Onto a track: the audio starts where you drop it.
  • Onto a track’s name: it goes after that track’s last clip.
  • Anywhere else: after the last clip of the selected track.

And onto the Audio library tab of the studio page, to upload them to the library without opening a project (or with the Upload audio button).

Almost any audio or video format is accepted: MP3, MP2, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, OGG/Opus, M4A/AAC, WMA, and the sound of a WebM or MP4 video…, up to 700 MB per file. It is converted automatically, and everything you upload is kept in the audio library. Uploading audio that is already there reuses it (This audio was already in the library).

The Full screen button (or the F key) shows only the editor, handy for long projects or several tracks. You can still drag files onto the tracks. To go back, Exit full screen, the F key or Esc.

To pull several pieces out of one recording (the answers of an interview, the speeches of a council meeting…):

  1. Select a range and press R (Mark clip). The clip appears in the Clips lane and in the Clips to extract list.
  2. Type its name and press Enter. Repeat for each clip.
  3. Press Extract N clips (for example “Extract 3 clips”) and choose One episode per clip (drafts), in the Program you pick, or One audio library item per clip.

Each clip keeps a link to the episode it came from: in the library it shows as “From “episode title””. A clip must last at least half a second.

Clean Voice removes background noise, hum and hiss from speech. It does not remove room echo or reverb, and music comes out damaged: use it on speech only.

You find it in two places:

  • The Clean Voice button in the editor header. It cleans The selected clip, The selection (the marked range, with its times) or The whole project when nothing is selected; the dialog offers only the options that apply. Clips that are already clean stay as they are.
  • In the clip panel, Clean This Clip.

Pick the Strength:

StrengthWhat it does
LightTakes off hiss and hum, keeps the sound of the room.
MediumRemoves most background noise. Right for most interviews.
StrongRemoves as much noise as possible, for streets and phone calls. The voice can sound processed.

The cleanup runs on the server in the background, at a few minutes per hour of audio: you can keep editing, or close the studio.

  • Meanwhile each clip shows Queued or its progress (for example “Cleaning 40%”), and the header shows the total (“Cleaning 3 clips · 40%”). Click that indicator to see each cleanup and Cancel any of them.
  • When it is ready, the clips switch to the clean audio by themselves and carry the Clean badge. The notice “Voice cleaned on 3 clips” offers Undo.
  • If you close the studio before it finishes, the cleanup is applied the next time you open the project.
  • If a cleanup fails, Retry runs it again (from the header indicator or from the clip panel).

The panel of a clean clip shows the strength (for example Voice cleaned (medium)) and offers Restore Original and Clean Again (with another strength). The original audio is never modified.

Each stretch that is cleaned can be at most 3 hours long; split a longer one first.

Save audio… offers three destinations:

  • Replace the audio of “episode” (only in projects opened from an episode). The episode’s current audio is kept as a Previous version in the audio library, so nothing is lost. Markers move with the edit (a marker that fell in a removed piece is deleted) and the episode is transcribed again. While the audio is being replaced the editor is locked, and it reloads when done.
  • New episode (draft): with the name and the Program you pick. It is created hidden, so you can review it before publishing.
  • Audio library: saved to the audio library, without publishing it anywhere.

The audio is produced on the server and appears under Outputs (Queued, Rendering, Ready) with a link to Open episode or Open the audio library.

An episode whose audio was replaced shows Edited in the studio in the episode list and on its page. Its audio editor shows the edited audio: you can add and move markers, but not trim it. To change that audio, go back to its studio project; the project’s clips still play as they did when you edited them, and are tagged Previous version.

  • Changes save themselves; the header shows Saved or Unsaved changes. Ctrl+S saves right away.
  • Ctrl+Z undoes and Ctrl+Shift+Z redoes (also the Undo and Redo buttons).
  • If you leave before a change is saved, the browser keeps it and offers Restore unsaved changes the next time you open the project.
  • If the project was saved from another tab or window, autosave stops and you can choose Reload the saved version or Keep mine.

A project holds up to 8 tracks, 100 clips and a 6-hour timeline.
